Some of My Puppetry Background
Q: Why do you write puppet scripts? What motivates you?
As a medium it is a great way to proclaim the gospel and to teach. It is unthreatening, and you can be a lot more blunt with a puppet than you can if you were speaking directly.
Q: Tell us about your church or puppet organisation.
Freshbrook puppets were formed by my wife and I. Using puppets for teaching was something on my wife's heart, so I did a children's talk, talking to a puppet which my wife operated. I saw how rapt the children's attention was and realised how effective the ministry could be. From there, we now have a team of about 12,and we perform in church and go out and about. We have some regular puppet characters, and I love to write.
Q: How did you get started in puppets and what attracted you to this area?
Sorry, just realised I answered that above! (note to self...read all the questions first)
Q: Where does your inspiration come from to write puppet scripts?
Obviously, ultimately I hope, the Lord, But when we are using it for teaching, I try to follow a theme, such as a series we are doing on the fruit of the spirit. The Easter and Christmas scripts are written for family events where I am keen the gospel is clearly presented.
Q: What advice would you give to someone just starting out in puppetry?
Work hard on your puppetry basics and keep your message clear and simple.
Q: Who are your favourite puppet characters and what do you like about them?
Beaker from the Muppets...loved his vulnerability, and always wanted to take him home and give him a cup of tea.
Q: What are the most important qualities in great puppet scripts?
A simple and clear message. Enjoyable to watch.
Q: What would you do if you were a puppet?
Never grow old!!!
