Some of My Puppetry Background
Q: Why do you write puppet scripts? What motivates you?
I translate them into Dutch since there are not enough good christian puppet scripts in my language.
Q: Tell us about your church or puppet organisation.
Our church is just starting with christian puppetry. It is a small baptist church with limited resources, so we are creating our own puppets from 'papier marche'. I intend to set up a team of puppeteers, but for the moment I am doing it only by myself.
Q: How did you get started in puppets and what attracted you to this area?
In my previous church there was a long standing puppet tradition, and there is where I fell in love with this great form of christian ministry
Q: Where does your inspiration come from to write puppet scripts?
From working with children, and especially from the humour in children's books. I especially like to use the traditional Dutch Mr. Punch, 'Jan Klaassen', because the children love him so much
Q: What advice would you give to someone just starting out in puppetry?
Being a beginner myself, I would say: just start. Even on a low-budget you can do marvellous things for children.
Q: Who are your favourite puppet characters and what do you like about them?
Jan Klaassen and Katrijn, the Dutch Punch and Judy, because they represent human archetypes with whom children can identify easily.
Q: What are the most important qualities in great puppet scripts?
Humour, action, surprise and interaction!
|
Q: What would you do if you were a puppet?
I would take a giant supersoaker... and all of a sudden make all the children soaking wet!
