Some of My Puppetry Background
Q: Why do you write puppet scripts? What motivates you?
We write puppet scripts to glorify the Lord. and the children who listen to the puppets motivates us.
Q: Tell us about your church or puppet organisation.
Our church is in Hammond, Indiana. The name of our puppet ministry is KidS.M.I.L.E. (small but mighty in the lords eyes)We have six puppets, the Grandpa & Grandma are in charge of a foster home, the other puppets are children in the home.
Q: How did you get started in puppets and what attracted you to this area?
During a mission trip in 1990 & 1991, I worked with puppets, found it a wonderful way to "act" out in a fun way to an audience that I knew would be attentive. I have always wanted to start a puppet ministry in our church, but never had the time, until one day when another member of our church announced he was starting a puppet ministry, well, I jumped at the chance to be at the meeting. Right before our first show, he backed out and told me to continue with the ministry.
Q: Where does your inspiration come from to write puppet scripts?
My husband and I both will come up with ideas, and we go from there, we have always encouraged the other puppet members to come up with ideas, and even write a script or two.
Q: What advice would you give to someone just starting out in puppetry?
PRACTICE, PRACTICE, PRACTICE. Practice more than you think you need to. Read everything you can on puppetry.
Q: Who are your favourite puppet characters and what do you like about them?
Me and Grandma are very close friends, she just loves the children she takes care of in her foster home. Mitzie and Marvin are brother and sister, who fight all the time. Mitzie is a little mean to her little brother, but in the end, they love each other.
Q: What are the most important qualities in great puppet scripts?
To have a clear message, and be aware of the age group the puppets are catering to, small children don't really listen to messages, but when puppets 'talk' they will listen.
Q: What would you do if you were a puppet?
I would be a real friend to the children.
