Some of My Puppetry Background |
Q: Why do you write puppet scripts? What motivates you? |
I want to teach children (and adults) Biblical principles in entertaining ways. |
Q: Tell us about your church or puppet organisation. |
It's pretty small and simple. Just a couple of people who are interested in reaching children. |
Q: How did you get started in puppets and what attracted you to this area? |
I got started doing puppets after I went to a Sunday School Teachers conference. They had a section on puppets and I was like: oh yeah, we could do puppets. 10 years later I can't imagine NOT doing them. |
Q: Where does your inspiration come from to write puppet scripts? |
Inspiration comes from all sources: the Bible, books, radio stories, etc. |
Q: What advice would you give to someone just starting out in puppetry? |
Work on your voice. Puppets are cute and all but the audience will QUICKLY get bored if you aren't performing well with your voice (accents, excitement, annunciation, etc.). Also beginners tend to not make the puppets life-like enough. Remember that even if your puppet isn't speaking it should still be doing SOMETHING. That is, somehow reacting to whatever else is going on at the moment. |
Q: Who are your favourite puppet characters and what do you like about them? |
I really like the devil puppet. I got one from the Puppetshoppe and gave it a kind of New York/Broklyn accent. Of course, the best part is the fact that he ALWAYS loses. |
Q: What are the most important qualities in great puppet scripts? |
Humor. Dialogue that can captivate kids and adults. The way I look at it is little kids will like the puppet skit because of the puppets and the silly voices. I think that it is good to write jokes that only older kids and adults will get (but not too many). That way you reach everyone. |
Q: What would you do if you were a puppet? |
I would answer this question. |
