Some of My Puppetry Background |
Q: Why do you write puppet scripts? What motivates you? |
To inspire children to use their imagination, build confidence and cooperate with others to perform a show and have fun! |
Q: Tell us about your church or puppet organisation. |
I have used these scripts/plays in the classroom and was impressed with how much the students loved preparing, directing and performing them.I now sell many other scripts for children on Etsy: https://www.etsy.com/shop/PuppetScriptsForKids. |
Q: How did you get started in puppets and what attracted you to this area? |
I was not able to find anything online so I wrote my own scripts. I also needed a variety of lengths of scripts and number of characters, so again, writing my own was the best option. |
Q: Where does your inspiration come from to write puppet scripts? |
Everywhere! Sometimes it comes from something I see around me, funny ideas that come to mind or something someone has said. I have several series in the hopper at any given time. |
Q: What advice would you give to someone just starting out in puppetry? |
Have fun doing it, and you will make it fun for the children who read and perform these plays. Also, work on at least one little aspect of your craft each day so that you do not become overwhelmed thinking that you have no time for this. The children need us! |
Q: Who are your favourite puppet characters and what do you like about them? |
Kukla, Fran and Ollie are my first memories of puppets. I do not recall any details, but I loved that they were puppets. I also liked Jim Henson's Muppets, particularly Animal and the Swedish Chemist because they were amusing without having to say anything. |
Q: What are the most important qualities in great puppet scripts? |
The dialogue has to flow naturally, and particularly in a series, the characters should be likable and relatable, someone we come to know over time. I want the children to care about the characters and become involved in the drama. |
Q: What would you do if you were a puppet? |
I would fly! |
