Some of My Puppetry Background
Q: Why do you write puppet scripts? What motivates you?
I write puppet plays to reach and teach children and adults about the Christian faith. A lot of the skits I write have been used as part of an all age worship service
or a school chapel service. I try to use a touch of humour to help with the delivery.
Q: Tell us about your church or puppet organisation.
Not answered yet.
Q: How did you get started in puppets and what attracted you to this area?
I started probably 40 years ago trying a short script as children’s talk with my own young children and then at church. People were encouraging and I kept on trying to work on the craft.
Q: Where does your inspiration come from to write puppet scripts?
Usually I write scripts when I’m leading or speaking at a children’s VBS or worship service. I pray and ask God to help me be creative in my writing so that the listeners will be impacted by the theme or message.
Q: What advice would you give to someone just starting out in puppetry?
Choose one puppet and find an appropriate name and voice to suit. Practise and seek feedback.Watch online videos and take opportunities to work with puppeteers more experienced if possible.
Q: Who are your favourite puppet characters and what do you like about them?
Ronnie is my favourite puppet. He’s became a favourite at the school where I used to work. Ronnie was a student at the fictional PLC- puppet learning centre. The boys loved to hear of his struggles, his family Ronaldo, Ronnetta, and his little bro. Later Ron.
Q: What are the most important qualities in great puppet scripts?
For children I think it’s important to keep it simple with one main teaching point. Don’t have long monologues. Keep dialogue short. Not too many characters. For Christian scripts keep faithful to Bible teaching. My view is that only puppets who are meant to be Bible characters should pray.Like a puppet dressed as Jesus not a fun puppet character I think puppets should commentate on what people believe rather than do the actual teaching.
Q: What would you do if you were a puppet?
I’d head to Eliab.com and check out the 50+ puppet scripts and see if there were some I could try out for.
