Q: Why do you write puppet scripts? What motivates you?
It's great to come up with something that makes people laugh and teaches at the same time. I get a charge out of watching the audience laugh at some of the scripts.
Q: Tell us about your church or puppet organisation.
We have a puppet show nearly every Wednesday night to supplement our teaching program.
Q: How did you get started in puppets and what attracted you to this area?
I started doing puppets as a teenager. We came up with some great scripts on our own and made our own puppets. Our teen group loved doing this because we saw it was something we could do to help with VBS, plus we got to spend time together creating and laughing and doing something positive with our energy and ideas.
Q: Where does your inspiration come from to write puppet scripts?
I love teaching, and I love laughter. I love to see kids learning and having fun doing so. The adults like the humor, too, and actually get the jokes better than the kids.
Q: What advice would you give to someone just starting out in puppetry?
Start out simple. Develop two to four puppets with distinct personalities. Practice a lot. Watch yourself in the mirror. Speak slowly and clearly. Enunciate all the words, even if it seems ridiculously slow.
Q: Who are your favourite puppet characters and what do you like about them?
We have several great characters. I like them all. A grandpa and grandma, several kids, mom and dad, a baby, an old farmer. They all have their purpose and place.
Q: What are the most important qualities in great puppet scripts?
Just like any story, it should have a beginning, a middle and an end. If the puppets have to resolve some problem or issue, it adds a lot. And always...it should make a point. One main point, and say it in several different ways.
Q: What would you do if you were a puppet?
I would want my operators to treat me with care and always put me away after every show so I didn't get "played with" by small children.
