Some of My Puppetry Background |
Q: Why do you write puppet scripts? What motivates you? |
We have just started a puppet ministry for our special needs ministry called "Open Door." The kids LOVE puppet time and are actually quiet without a lot of prompting!! I started out using a few of your scripts and adapting them for our Bible stories. Then came Advent and I couldn't find a good script for the Angel appearing to Mary. One of the higher-functioning individuals said "please try to make the story different." So I prayed about it and felt God gave me this story-line. Since y'all helped me get started, I wanted to share this with you. |
Q: Tell us about your church or puppet organisation. |
The church began the "Open Door Ministry" 2 1/2 years ago for individuals with special needs. Some have autism, Down Syndrome, or various other symptoms preventing them from fitting into the regular Sunday School Classes. My daughter has Down Syndrome plus a behavior disorder. This program has been a God-send to both of us. I have begun to volunteer some and usually do the puppets. I bought 8 beautiful puppets on e-bay and was reimbursed by the church. |
Q: How did you get started in puppets and what attracted you to this area? |
A previous church we attended had puppets and I saw how the special needs kids were ministered to thru puppets. The puppet seller told me about your website for scripts and pointed me to a book called "Puppet Ministry Made Easy" that was on the Wal-Mart website. |
Q: Where does your inspiration come from to write puppet scripts? |
When I can't find a ready-made script on our elementary level, I need to write one for the current Bible Lesson--a no-brainer! |
Q: What advice would you give to someone just starting out in puppetry? |
Don't have any since I'm new! |
Q: Who are your favourite puppet characters and what do you like about them? |
Harley Hound Dog and Caleb Camel. Harley is dressed in street clothes with round sunglasses; Caleb is dressed in a robe with a cloth/head band like a biblical character. Both puppet bodies are covered with hair. We used them to tell the story of Noah's ark from the animals point of view! |
Q: What are the most important qualities in great puppet scripts? |
Simplicity. Stick to one or two points. (Good)Humor is great to keep the audience relaxed. Great to include the audience when possible. |
Q: What would you do if you were a puppet? |
I would want the children to know I love them and most of all, that God loves them. |
